Kenneth Thompson, our Organist/Director of Music, is a native of Elizabeth City and a graduate of ECSU, where he earned the Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education with a concentration in organ and choral music. During this time Kenneth studied organ with the late Leonard R. Ballou and traveled to Europe as accompanist for the University Choir. He was very active as piano and organ accompanist for several faculty and student performances, appeared as piano soloist with the University Symphonic Band and assisted the University Organist. Since completing his studies at ECSU, Kenneth has returned on several occasions to accompany soloists and the university choir.

Kenneth has taught Choral Music in the Dare County Public Schools, Manteo, NC and also General and Choral Music in the Wicomico County Public Schools in Salisbury, MD for several years. He has taught several students piano and is a member of the following professional organizations: The American Guild of Organists, The American Choral Directors Association, The Hampton University Choir Directors- Organists’ Guild and a member of the Handbell Musicians of America.

Kenneth joined the CEC staff in February of 2012. Before returning home to Elizabeth City, he was a church Organist/Choir Director in the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia for twenty-six years. He was also a piano choral accompanist for Norfolk Public Schools for many years and a freelance accompanist for the Hampton Roads Area, frequently appearing as accompanist for Chesapeake Public Schools.
