Retired Bishop

The Rt. Rev. Bane is a proud hillbilly from West Virginia, with his early childhood in Morgantown.  He majored in Economics in college and entered the business world. He spent four years as an officer in the United States Air Force, and then earned an MBA in Management.  He returned to the corporate world until 1982, when he believed the Lord was clling him to seek ordination as a priest in The Episcopal Church.  With his wife Alice and four children they sold their home, quit their jobs and spent three years in Alexandria, Virginia, while he attended Virginia Theological Seminary receiving a Masters of Divinity in 1985.  He then served as Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Wheeling, West Virginia; St. James Episcopal Church, Keene, New Hampshire; and Christ Episcopal Church, Dayton, Ohio.  To his great surprise, in 1997 he was elected as the Bishop of Southern Virginia consisting of 125 churches, 150 clergy, and 35,000 parishioners.  He served in that capacity until retirement in 2006, when he and Alice retired and moved to Elizabeth City where two of their daughters and six of their twelve grandchildren happen to live.  They love this community and this parish and and are planning no more moves, the Lord willing!
